Is it better to lick the lens or use a finger to apply saliva?

It is best to use your finger to apply saliva from under your tongue to the lens. This method helps avoid creating bubbles.

How can I remove air bubbles from the saliva on the lens

Gently smooth the saliva with your finger to remove any air bubbles.

Should I use water to clean the microscope?

To clean the microscope, use the enclosed cloth. Avoid using water directly on the lens as it could seep inside and cause damage. A damp cloth may be used cautiously.

How do you activate the light on the microscope?

The light automatically activates when you remove the top and the red plastic ring.

Does the microscope light turn off by itself?

Yes, the light will automatically turn off when the cover is replaced.

What should I do if the light doesn’t turn on even after removing the protective ring?

If the light doesn’t turn on, it may be necessary to replace the batteries. Please refer to the video tutorial and use the spare batteries included with your kit.

What does the lifetime warranty cover?

The lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects. The warranty process is explained in the product instructions. Note: Batteries are not included in the warranty, but new batteries are provided in the kit. A copy of the purchase receipt is required for any exchanges.

Why have I never heard of this before?

Most women are never taught to understand the science that perpetuates their monthly menses.  Unless they are motivated to keep track, many women cannot answer when ovulation occurred, how long menstruation lasted, or the date when their last menstrual period occurred.

How does it work?

KNOWHEN® Saliva Fertility Tester is 98.9% accurate in measuring the level of estrogen in a woman’s cycle at any point in time using her saliva.  Estrogen rises in the blood stream as it is secreted by the maturing follicles until it peaks.  During this time estrogen in saliva will cause a crystalline pattern to develop as the saliva is allowed to dry naturally.  Once the estrogen has begun to peak, right before the release of a mature egg, the crystalline pattern looks just like the leaves of a fern. This is called ferning.  This is a woman’s fertile period when she is capable of conceiving.

KNOWHEN® is cost effective way for women to decipher their fertility window and to know when they are most likely ovulating.  This gives women the precise knowledge they need to decide whether or not they want to get pregnant.

Are there any side effects?

Absolutely not!  It is completely natural, uses no chemicals and does not interfere with the body’s natural processes.  Females can safely use this device during all phases of their reproductive lives.  Ideally women should make it a habit of using this device from adolescence, as they begin to know their bodies, through menopause when a “change of life” pregnancy may still be a possibility.

My cycle is irregular...Can I use KNOWHEN®?

Yes.  It’s a myth that every woman ovulates on the 14th day of their menstrual cycle. When a woman ovulates is dependent on her cycle length, amount of estrogen, and her age.  A woman can ovulate as soon as 10 days into her cycle and as late as 21.

No one is more familiar with your monthly cycle than you are.  Fertility cycles average 28 days, but can be much shorter or longer, each woman is unique.  The KNOWHEN® Saliva Tester lets you pinpoint the time you are ovulating whether or not you are regular.

Why do some women have regular menstrual cycles and still have problems to conceive?

Just because a women has a regular period doesn’t mean she’s ovulating every month.  It is important to know that an estrogen surge or ovulation may not occur in all cycles.  Often a woman will stop birth control to become pregnant and, after a few cycles, her periods become irregular and sometime stop all together.   Sometimes this can be caused by the hormone withdrawal that going off some birth controls can cause. Other times this is actually infertility.

When using KNOWHEN®, a woman would be able to tell if her estrogen is not normal. She would see either constant ferning or no ferning at all at any time in her cycle. This would prompt her to seek medical help and further diagnostic testing.

How long does it take the saliva to dry?

It should dry in about ten to twenty minutes and it also depend from the temperature in the room. We recommend keeping it by your bedside table so you can use it upon awakening.  Do not keep it in the bathroom or in humid conditions.  Moisture will interfere with the drying process and the result.

How accurate is the KNOWHEN® Saliva Fertility Tester in determining my most fertile days?

When used and interpreted correctly, it is a highly accurate (98.9%) and effective method for determining the time of ovulation.  The technique has been used in medical testing laboratories for over 20 years.

What is the best time to use KNOWHEN®?

For accurate reliable test results the ONLY recommended time to test a drop of your saliva is first thing in the morning before brushing the teeth, eating or drinking. Certain factors such as food, alcohol or smoking may negatively affect the analysis of saliva. Therefore, we recommend not eating or drinking anything before the test.

Is the picture affected by an oral infection?

It may be. Certain types of infections and diseases may affect the saliva crystalline structure.

Can I use the KNOWHEN® Saliva Fertility Monitor during menstruation?

It can be used at any part of the cycle. It is a good idea to use it even during your menstrual cycle, so you do not break your routine habit of testing. It has not been unheard of to accidentally ovulate during your menstrual cycle and get pregnant.

What happens if I am already pregnant?

This device is not a pregnancy test.  In most cases, the reading will show only a dotted infertile picture.

Will I see ovulation at the same time each month and what if I don’t?

For some women, yes, but this is due to a second estrogen surge near the end of the cycle.  As women mature past the age of 27, ovulation cycles begin to decline. Some women, especially after being on the “pill”, have ovulation only once every 10 months.  This makes it very hard to pinpoint the few days they are capable of conceiving.  This is one reason the KNOWHEN® is superior to urine strip ovulation tests.

If a woman is not producing enough estrogen she will not get the ferning pattern at any point during her cycle. This could also mean she has issues with her ovaries, progesterone, prolactin, or even cysts and needs to see a doctor.

What is that if I’m seeing ferning all the time?

To have ferning all cycle long means your estrogen is too high and can it indicate other more serious types of cysts, tumors, or other potentially dangerous conditions.  For instance, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that affects approximately 5% of all women where a woman does not ovulate properly.

The reason could also be because some women are not producing enough progesterone.  In any case you need to consult your doctor.  It can be a reason why you have difficulties to conceive.

Using KNOWHEN® Tester can enable more women to get early diagnosis and treatment for potentially life threatening conditions. This can save many lives and possibly the ability to try for a family in the future if caught early.

Have any clinical studies been done on the KNOWHEN® Saliva Ovulation Tester?

Several clinical trials have been done on the KNOWHEN® medical device and all results show a 98% accuracy on the day of ovulation to show a fern pattern appear on the microscope. The studies correlated the detection of a surge in the Luteinizing Hormone (LH) present in the body at the time when ovulation is about to occurs and shows the appearance of a fern pattern within dried saliva on the KNOWHEN® microscope.

In the chart Day “0” represents the LH surge and the day of ovulation compared to  +/- 1 (24hrs) & 2 (48hrs) days before and after Day 0.  The % accuracy of the LH surge is presented below (#of women who saw fern pattern / # of ovulation cycled studied).

Can the KNOWHEN® Saliva Fertility Monitor give me misleading results?

Yes, if you test your saliva at any other time than first thing in the morning you can get a false result.  Any food or drink you consume that contains salt can change your result and this is why it is recommended you test first thing in the morning before you brush your teeth when your saliva is uncontaminated.

Why not use the traditional Basal Body Temperature Method to detect ovulation?

Using the Basal Body Temperature (meaning taking your temperature first thing in the morning before you get out of bed) has been used for years to detect ovulation BUT it will only show you that ovulation has occurred. For many years this was the only available method woman had to use to help them monitor their ovulation pattern when trying to get pregnant.

On average women trying to get pregnant have eleven to twelve chances per year to get pregnant and having intercourse before, during and after ovulation will dramatically increase your chances of getting pregnant.  The KNOWHEN® medical device not only shows a woman when she has ovulated but shows her the crucial few days prior to ovulation when she is most fertile and has a higher probability of conceiving.

Why is the picture unclear?

There may be several reasons:

  • Too much saliva has been applied
  • You have not waited for the saliva to completely dry and the drying crystallization process to end.
  • The picture has not been focused or the diopter has not been adjusted (simply sharpen and adjust the picture).
  • While applying the saliva, the glass has been pressed hard with your finger and consequently your saliva has been pressed out (clean the optic lens and reapply saliva gently to the lens surface, taking care to avoid leaving any air bubbles).

Can I share KNOWHEN® Saliva Fertility Monitor with a family member?

You could if you wanted to, but it is much better to have your own KNOWHEN® next to your bed for convenience sake and hygienic purposes.

Can I show my fern pattern results to someone?

Yes, just do not touch or disturb the saliva. Undisturbed saliva will keep its fern pattern results as long as it is not touched, disturbed or subjected to changes or other environmental factors.

Can I use more than one KNOWHEN® Saliva Ovulation Testers?

Women that travel a lot or live in two locations frequently purchase more than one KNOWHEN® medical device for convenience purposes.

The light on the device is not turning on. What should I do?

The light system is designed for a long-term use.  Considering that the KNOWHEN® medical device should not be stored in the bathroom or in other humid areas, it will last for at least a year to several years in dry conditions.  We do not have control over the warehousing conditions of retailers where you purchased the product, so we recommend you make sure that batteries inside your device are clean and dry.

Here is how you clean your batteries:

  1. Hold the device so the lens part of the device is pointing down, and the purple part with a light switch is on top.
  2. Gently turn little purple part of the microscope body to the left.
  3. Carefully pull out the light system mechanism.
  4. Very carefully pull out the plastic piece on the lighting mechanism. Make sure not to rip the wire!  This will void your warranty.
  5. You will see two batteries. Take out both batteries.
  6. Put new batteries.
  7. Reassemble the device by putting the light system back in the body of the device.
  8. Gently turn little purple part of the microscope body to the right.
  9. Your device should work now.

How long will the KNOWHEN® Tester last?

With careful use the KNOWHEN® medical device can last years, as long as you do not let it get wet, drop it or interfere with the light housing unit.
