Nurturing your reproductive health often starts with what’s on your plate. While no single food guarantees conception, research shows that specific nutrients can improve reproductive function for both partners.

What’s more encouraging is that many fertility-supporting nutrients are found in everyday foods. This means that changing your diet can be an easy first step towards becoming pregnant.

Whether you’re actively trying to conceive or planning to do so in the future,  improving your diet can help with reproductive success.

Let’s explore top five foods that can support your fertility journey and practical ways to incorporate them into your daily routine.

1. Salmon

Wild-caught salmon stands out as a fertility superfood due to its remarkable omega-3 fatty acid content. These essential fats play a crucial role in hormone regulation and reducing inflammation—two key factors in reproductive health. What makes salmon particularly valuable is its high concentration of vitamin D and selenium, nutrients that support both egg and sperm quality.

For optimal benefits, aim to consume wild-caught salmon twice weekly. Try roasting it with herbs for dinner or adding smoked salmon to your breakfast. Avoid farmed varieties, as they may contain unwanted mercury and antibiotics that could impact fertility.

How to Include It:

  • Bake or grill salmon with a side of roasted vegetables for a balanced meal.
  • Add canned salmon to salads or grain bowls.
  • Enjoy salmon sushi rolls (opt for cooked varieties if pregnancy is possible).

Alternative Sources: Sardines, anchovies, and mackerel are also excellent low-mercury options for omega-3s.

2. Walnuts

Research has revealed a fascinating connection between walnut consumption and reproductive health. In a groundbreaking study, men who consumed just 2.5 ounces of walnuts daily for three months showed significant improvements in sperm quality and motility.

These nuts pack a powerful combination of omega-3s, vitamin E, and antioxidants that protect reproductive cells from oxidative stress.

How to Include Them:

  • Snack on a handful of walnuts daily (about 42 grams).
  • Sprinkle crushed walnuts on oatmeal, salads, or yogurt for a nutrient boost.
  • Blend walnuts into smoothies or use them as a crunchy topping for roasted vegetables.

3. Full-fat Dairy

Contrary to popular dietary advice, research indicates that full-fat dairy products may increase fertility, particularly in women. Studies have found that women who consume full-fat dairy products have a lower risk of ovulatory infertility compared to those who opt for low-fat alternatives.

Greek yogurt and aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano are especially beneficial due to their high concentrations of fertility-supporting nutrients.

How to Include It:

  • Opt for full-fat Greek yogurt with fresh berries for breakfast.
  • Snack on hard cheeses like Parmesan or pair with whole-grain crackers.
  • Use whole milk in smoothies or cooking.

4. Lentils and Beans

These humble legumes deserve special attention in any fertility-focused diet. Rich in folate, iron, and plant-based protein, lentils and beans support healthy ovulation and embryo development.

Research suggests that women who obtain their protein primarily from plant sources have lower rates of ovulatory infertility.

How to Include Them:

  • Prepare lentil soup or chili for a hearty, fertility-friendly meal.
  • Toss beans into salads or grain bowls for added protein.
  • Make hummus using chickpeas or black beans as a healthy dip or spread.

5. Antioxidant-Rich Berries: Your Fertility Shield

Berries pack a powerful punch when it comes to reproductive health. Their high antioxidant content helps protect both eggs and sperm from oxidative damage, while their natural compounds support hormonal balance.

Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are particularly beneficial due to their high levels of vitamin C and folate.

How to Include Them:

  • Add fresh or frozen berries to smoothies, yogurt, or oatmeal.
  • Snack on a handful of berries or mix them into a fruit salad.
  • Use berries as a topping for whole-grain pancakes or desserts.

Tip: Choose organic berries when possible to minimize exposure to pesticides, which can disrupt hormone function.
